About DTL Vape Coils
DTL (Direct-to-Lung) vape coils are for devices and vaping styles where the vapour is inhaled straight into the lungs, rather than into the mouth first as with an MTL coil. While MTL coils replicate smoking a cigarette, DTL devices are unique to vaping and produce thick, dense and flavourful clouds that are packed with flavour.
Generally, DTL coils for vapes are best for sub-ohm vaping. They have a resistance below 1.0Ω and use a high wattage (30W+) to maximise flavour and vapour from thicker e-liquids. As a result, they’re best used in sub-ohm vape kits, sometimes with variable wattage, adjustable power and an airflow control system to get the best results.
Because they produce such thick, flavourful vapour, DTL vapes and coils are best used with low-nicotine high-VG shortfill e-liquids - usually 3mg of the former and 70%+ of the latter. Like all vape coils, DTL versions need to be properly primed and soaked before use to avoid a burning taste and to make them last longer. It’s also a good idea to make sure the liquid in the tank doesn’t run too low for maximum flavour and vapour reproduction.
DTL Vape Coils FAQs
What are DTL vape coils?
DTL vape coils are for sub-ohm devices where the vapour is inhaled directly into the lungs. They produce thick, dense clouds of vapour that are packed with flavour. Unlike MTL devices, they can take a bit of getting used to, so they are often better for experienced vapers with higher-end devices that they can customise and adjust. DTL coils have lower resistance and use a higher wattage to get those signature clouds.
What is the best ohm for DTL coils?
If you want massive clouds and plenty of flavour, DTL coils below 0.4Ω, used with high-VG shortfill e-liquids, are ideal.
However, there is no ‘best’ ohm for DTL coils because this is heavily dependent on user preference. A major advantage of DTL devices is that they can be customised and modified as the user likes. Therefore, sub-ohm vape kits are better for experienced vapers who already know what they want or are looking to experiment.
What e-liquid is the best for DTL coils?
Shortfill e-liquids are the best as they come in a high-VG blend, which is ideal for high-wattage vaping. Generally, you want to look for a VG level of 70% or above, as this will generate big clouds that are still smooth and full of flavour. Because of the intense vaping style, low nicotine levels (3mg) are often recommended.

Are DTL coils better than MTL coils?
One is not better than the other because they deliver very different vaping experiences. If you’re new to vaping, have been using disposables previously, or simply want something simple that replicates smoking, MTL coils are the best place to start.
If you want to start experimenting, MTL coils around 0.7Ω will indicate what you like before you can progress to sub-ohm kits.
On the other hand, DTL coils are aimed much more at seasoned vapers who have plenty of experience with plenty of different ohms and devices.
