Best MtL vape kits 2019

What are the top mouth to lung vaping starter kits on the market right now? If you’re new to vaping, and are looking for recommendations for the best kits, look no further...

Our helpful team at Vape UK HQ wanted to pass on their advice for selecting the best vaping kit. If you’re looking to quit smoking and start vaping, or if (like me) you’re a seasoned mouth-to-lung (MtL) vaper looking for a new kit, here are our recommendations for the top MtL vaping kits that are currently available.

SMOK Nord Pod Kit

Sleek, discreet, elegant - the SMOK Nord all-in-one pod system is perfect for newbie vapers.

At less than 10cm high, it is the ultimate in pocket-sized pods. However, don’t let its diminutive stature fool you. Its 1100mAh rechargeable battery packs a cloudy punch and provides all-day use for the average vaper.

Unlike similar pod systems in its class, the SMOK Nord has a fire button like a standard vape kit. Tap it five times to turn it on, and the same to turn it off (recommended if you don’t want to accidentally fire it in your pocket). Tap it twice and the LED light on the button lets you know how much life is left in your battery.

When the light is red, you’re ready to recharge via the USB port that’s conveniently located on the bottom of the kit. Its pass through charging ability allows you to continue vaping while the kit is charging.

The kit is delivered with a 1.4 ohm coil - perfect for MtL vaping, or for use with nic salts. The coils are replaceable meaning each pod will last you longer.

For Direct Lung (DtL) vapers, don’t worry - you’re catered for as well. The kit also comes with a 0.6 ohm coil which makes the SMOK Nord a great discreet option for sub-ohmers.

You can also purchase 1.4 ohm ceramic coils separately. The ceramic version is still ideal for MtL, but for those of us who tend to chain vape.

The 2ml pod/tank is super easy to refill. We recommend filling the pod at an angle to achieve full tank capacity. The fill port has a rubber stopper which stays attached (no more lost bungs!) and will accommodate most e-liquid nozzles. Plus, the tank is completely air driven meaning you don’t have to faff around making manual adjustments to suit your coil. The airflow configuration provides a looser draw than some seasoned MtL vapers might be used to, but the hit, flavour, and cloud production are still impressive.

Design-wise, it’s pretty swish! There are a whopping 21 colour options across various finishes including cobra-style, resin, and carbon fibre. The duck-billed mouthpiece is ergonomic and comfortable.

SMOK Nord Pod Kit Verdict

A fantastic all-in-one solution that’s really improved on its SMOK Novo predecessor. We highly recommend the SMOK Nord to anyone looking for an inexpensive pod kit with great flavour and vapour production

Uwell Whirl 22 AIO Starter Kit

The masters of flavour delivery at Uwell have done it again with the Whirl 22 AIO kit. Their DtL Nunchaku tank is one of our bestsellers and this seems set to be just as popular with our MtL customers.

The inclusion of 2 x 0.6 ohm coils might lead you to believe that it’s better suited to sub-ohm vaping. However, the 5 adjustable airflow holes offer varying degrees of a tight draw - far more suited to those of us who prefer the hit of MtL vaping. However, restricted DtL vaping is possible.

The 22 in the product title refers to the diameter of the housing in which sits a powerful integrated 1600mAh rechargeable battery. The kit has a very decent 25W max wattage output, and time to fully charged is around 90 minutes.

The AIO in the product title stands for all-in-one. It earns this acronym as the Whirl 22 is the first built-in Uwell tank with a handy top opening e-liquid refill. A TPD compliant 2ml tank with reinforced quartz glass comes as standard, with the option to purchase a 3.5ml replacement bulb glass for heavier users.

The coils work on a very simple plug and pull basis, no fiddly screwing required! Plus, Uwell’s proprietary R&D provides multiple safety features including short circuit protection, low voltage protection, overcharging protection, 10-second limit per hit, and overheating protection.

Design wise, the Uwell Whirl 22 AIO is simple and classic. It’s available in 6 metallic colours, including sapphire blue which is my personal favourite.

A couple of negatives to point out…. Firstly, the charging port on the bottom of the tube means the kit charges on its side; a small number of users have reported flooded coils because of this. Secondly, the increased safety precautions mean no pass through charging; so, when the battery dies, it’s no more vaping for you until it’s recharged (unless you have a backup).

Uwell Whirl 22 AIO Starter Kit Verdict

This is a great value starter kit. Simple to use and classy to look at, the Whirl 22 delivers flavour usually only available with more expensive sub ohm kits.

Innokin Endura T18 II

The original Endura T18 from Innokin was an absolutely fantastic kit; and with the T18 II, the best just got better!

This updated starter kit from Innokin features a built-in power adjustment function which is so simple to use, it’s ridiculous. Choose between 10.5W (cool), 12W (medium), and 13.5W (warm). We would recommend the warm or medium settings for nic salts or lower strength freebase nicotine e-liquids. High strength (12mg) freebase nicotine vapers should opt for the cool setting to avoid a harsh throat hit.

The other difference to its predecessor is improved battery capacity. You now get 1300mAh rechargeable battery instead of 1000mAh. The LED light above the fire button will flash to let you know how much battery life you have left. Expect to get about 10 hours of vaping on a single charge when vaping on the medium power setting.

The adjustable airflow is perfectly calibrated for MtL vaping - use with all 4 holes exposed for a looser draw, or close them off one by one to tighten the draw and get the sensation of smoking. This is ideal for anybody looking to make the move towards quitting the fags for good.

The top filling 2ml Prism tank is simple to refill. The kit comes with 2 T18E 1.5 ohm coils (please note that if you’re upgrading from the previous Endura T18, your leftover coils won’t fit). The coils are plug and pull and the three wicking holes up the side make it easy to tell when the coil is properly primed.

Now for my favourite feature… a magnetic hygiene cap for the mouthpiece. Pop it on when you’re not vaping to prevent guff getting inside your drip tip. When you are vaping, the magnet allows it to be attached to the bottom of the battery housing. Such a simple idea, you wonder why all vape kits don’t have one!

Design wise, the Endura T18 II is a stunner! The graduated paint finish looks natural, rather than a coating. The kit is nicely weighted and feels great in the hand. However, be aware that its tall slender stature does mean that it’s pretty easy to knock over.

Innokin Endura T18II Verdict

This is a cracking starter kit! Its predecessor was great, but the addition of the adjustable power and improved battery life are a welcome development. The instructions are super clear and easy to follow. All in all, we would highly recommend this kit as a perfect vehicle to quit smoking and start vaping.

Horizon Magico Nic Salt Stick Kit

The name might lead you to believe that you can only use the Magico Nic Salt Stick with nicotine salt e-liquids, but that isn’t the case. In fact, the pre-installed 0.12 ohm Magico mesh coil has a constant output of 25W and is recommended for use with regular e-liquid for DtL vaping.

However, as a starter kit for MtL vapers, the supplied 1.8 ohm coil has a constant output of 13W which works beautifully with nic salts. If nic salts aren’t your bag, the coil will also support regular e-liquid as long as the nicotine strength is 6mg or lower.

The kit comes with a 2ml tank fitted; however, a 5.5ml replacement bulb glass is included as standard to reduce refilling requirements. The tank itself is really simple to fill; simply lift the top cap and slide to the side to open.

One of the best features of the tank is its dual airflow methods. The first set of airflow controls are commonplace on the best sub-ohm tanks, and enable direct lung vapers to produce their preferred size of cloud. So far, so normal. However, the beauty lies with the secondary airflow controls which are specifically designed with mouth-to-lung vapers in mind. A series of micro-hole adjustments allows you to accurately control the tightness of the draw. This clever innovation, along with the coil power output, makes this kit completely interchangeable between vaping styles.

The built-in 2000mAh battery has fantastic capacity; when used for MtL on the constant lower power output you should be able to vape to your heart’s content between charges. It also comes with some great safety features including high temperature protection, 10 second overtime protection, short-circuit protection, and charging protection.

Design wise, considering the size of the battery, the Magico is pretty small. It’s a good weight and the texture on the fire button makes it easy to find. There are six colours to choose from and all come in a shiny, stainless finish. This can make it a bit fingerprint-y on the lighter colours, but it looks great!

Horizon Magico Nic Salt Stick Kit Verdict

We’re really impressed with this kit. It’s more expensive than the other kits on our list; however, the versatility of being able to easily switch between vaping styles makes it well worth the extra cash. The quality of the coils, and the pure flavour delivery, make the Horizon Magico a serious contender for the best MtL vape kit right now.

OBS Cube Mini

The OBS Cube Mini is, unsurprisingly, the mini version of the OBS Cube (which features on our list of the 5 best DtL vape kits right now). What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in power and usability.

As with most of the starter kits on the list, the kit includes two coils. The pre-installed S1 mesh coil is 0.6 ohm and can be used with higher VG e-liquids with a low nicotine content. The alternative N1 coil is 1.2 ohm and designed to use with nicotine salt e-liquids, or higher strength, lower VG regular vape juice. Both coils have a really even heating ability which delivers excellent flavour.

As with the Horizon Magico, the OBS Cube Mini features two different bottom airflow systems dependant on which coil you’re using.

The 2ml tank has an easy sliding top to refill; plus you have the option to change to a 3ml tank if you prefer more liquid capacity.

The mod part has a built-in 1500mAh rechargeable battery with a 3.5V constant power output. This is safer, and makes the battery last longer. However, you can’t adjust it and some users might find that power output a bit on the low side. Unlike its big brother, there is no screen on the mod. Instead, an LED light prompts you when the battery needs charging.

As with other kits on this list, the OBS Cube Mini comes with intelligent safety features built-in including overcharge protection, voltage protection, and short circuit protection.

Design wise, this kit closely resembles a dinky version of the mod and tank style more often associated with sub ohm vaping. The resin finish on the mod and drip tip is quite space age in appearance and the kit comes in 5 different colour options (the names of which don’t make it obvious what the colour should be!). The large fire button is ergonomic and powers up quickly.

OBS Cube Mini Verdict

Small, discreet, and very portable. The OBS Cube is really simple to use and the dual coil and flexible airflow functions make it suitable for a vaper that likes to switch their vaping style. For newbies, however, the constant low power output and compatibility with lower nicotine e-liquids might not provide the best first impression. If you are a new vaper, and you really like the look of this kit, we would recommend using it with nic salts on the 1.2 ohm coil for the best results.
